Situated Waiting Tables

2025

hand written scrolls, white plates, payslips, bowl

variable dimensions

This installation is developed from a reflective, embodied text written after two years of part-time work in a Chinese restaurant in Utrecht. By merging the roles of dishwasher and artist, the work makes invisible labour tangible. Two scrolls, written in different languages (Chinese & English), are presented: one mounted on the wall, the other draping down a stack of plates. Beneath them, payslips accumulate. An upside-down bowl keeps everything in place. A white altar is formed where labour, language and thought coexist.
